Forever Amber

 Forever Amber

Hello and welcome to Cinema Wellman. I am your host David and today we’re going to break down a little streak we are about to end on purpose before things get out of hand, and we’ll also explain why this episode is titled Forever Amber.

By definition, a streak is a “continuous period of success or luck.”

Many “streaks” have something to do with entertainment or sports so we may not be talking about the most important accomplishments in world history when we discuss them, and that’s certainly the case with this streak.

I often wondered if I could go a calendar year seeing at least one new movie every day.

I’ve averaged more than one movie per day nine different years, but I never had a streak of 365 straight days screening a new movie, so that’s what I attempted to do.

The streak began on January 1, 2024, and my goal was for it to continue until December 31st, 2024.

All was going well until mid-June when I was updating the database.

As I entered a title, to my horror, it auto filled on Google Sheets!

Autofill can mean only one thing…that title already exists in that database.

I watched a film on April 21st and watched it again on June 15th.

The “problem” was it was the ONLY film I screened on June 15th, so my streak ended halfway through the year.

I was a little disappointed since this was totally an unforced error, but I did the only thing I could, which was start a new streak on June 16th, 2024.

If you’ve spent time with me since then and are thinking, we didn’t watch a movie together that day, you may be right since I watched movies during my breaks at work, early in the morning, after midnight so they’d count for the next day, and, admittedly, that’s when things get a little silly.

And, as I mentioned, I’m ending this streak on purpose before it becomes more of an obsession that has me faking a power outage that just affects Cinema Wellman so the streak can continue the next day.

Like, who would do that?

So, I’m pulling a Howard Beale today on this episode (kind of), and will end the streak by NOT watching a new movie today.

Wait, what?

Oh, that’s right!

Chet reminds me that I already watched a movie today, so the streak will end tomorrow!

A quick calculation puts the final number at 548 consecutive days screening at least one new movie.

Not a "calendar" year, but a total of a year and a half, which isn’t bad at all!

Now that we’ve hit the 10,000-film mark and our consecutive screening day streak is coming to an end at 548 days, we have no idea what’s next on the agenda.

But whatever it is, we’ll be sure to share it with you.

Next up for us will be our annual Holiday “Which Was Worse?” and this season we’ll be watching and judging all the movies in the Silent Night, Deadly Night series and determining Which Was Worse!

They made more of them than you think!

Until then, take care.

Oh, and that film that I double screened last year that snapped the original streak…Forever Amber.
